In 1967, three friends lived in Washington: Skip, an outdoor enthusiast; Murray, an engineer; and Jan, an experienced seamstress. At that time, Murray won a design award from the Alcoa Company for creating the first adjustable aluminum frame for backpacks. Afterward, Murray asked his girlfriend Jan to create a backpack pattern for his new aluminum frame. If it became a success, he would name the company after her. Murray, Skip, and Jan joined forces, and indeed, it became a success. This is how the name JanSport originated!
Mount Rainier
Mount Rainier was an inspiration for Skip, Jan, and Murray. It was their headquarters for adventure, where campsites were blown away by the wind, where nights were spent in snow caves, and where a magnificent sunrise was the reward for those who reached the summit. In 1972, Skip, Jan, and Murray invited their friends for what is now known as the longest consecutive group climb on Mount Rainier. This is also an annual JanSport event. The mountain remains a place for the brand to test and explore their products and themselves, as well as to share the outdoors with friends.
JanSport SuperBreak
One day, some students from the University of Washington discovered JanSport's hiking backpacks and started using them to keep their books dry in the rain. It was there and then that the campus backpack was born, later known as the SuperBreak. Since then, the brand has designed backpacks, bags, and outdoor gear for amazing adventures and daily activities. At JanSport, they strive to create durable, functional, and versatile products that you can rely on, whether you're facing a long day, going out with friends, or immersing yourself in nature.
Sustainability
In 1967, JanSport was founded to help adventurers experience and celebrate the outdoors. In the years that followed, this mission expanded to protecting and preserving the outdoors so that future generations can enjoy it. Today, at JanSport, they critically examine the ecological footprint and sustainability of everything they do. They are still working on it, but this season, they have used recycled plastic, equivalent to approximately 13,000,000 450ml plastic water bottles, for their best-selling packaging.
