After returning home from the war in 1945, Kihachiro Onitsuka founded ONITSUKA Shokai in Japan in 1949, which later became ASICS. ASICS is an acronym for the Latin expression 'Anima Sana In Corpore Sano' ('You should pray for a healthy mind in a healthy body'). Onitsuka first heard the expression when a friend gave him business advice during the war. This friend was Kohei Hori, Director of Health and Physical Education at the Hyogo Prefecture Board of Education. The words made a deep impression on Onitsuka and inspired him to create shoes that would encourage young people to move.
