The brand GOT BAG started in 2016 by collecting plastic from the ocean and recycling it to create bags and backpacks. Since then, they have gradually increased the capacity of their cleanup program and the amount of plastic they collect monthly. The material used by GOT BAG is called Ocean Impact Plastic. This material is composed of plastic actively collected from the ocean and surrounding areas, including mangrove areas, rivers, or even places where plastic ends up directly after use. This measure prevents plastic from ending up in the ocean due to a lack of waste management infrastructure.
Ocean Impact Plastic
With Ocean Impact Plastic, not only PET is recycled for GOT BAG production. All other collected plastics are also used for suitable recycling solutions to prevent them from (re)entering the ocean. Plastic bags need to be processed into secondary raw materials for use in other products. PET is recycled into fabric for GOT BAG backpacks. Residual materials are particularly difficult to recycle due to coatings and/or adhesives. They are used to replace fossil fuels in energy production.
Waterproof bags
Through the GOT BAG cleanup program on the north coast of Java, Indonesia, more than 2000 local participants collect plastic from coastal waters, mangrove forests, and the delta area of nearby rivers. The collected Ocean Impact Plastic no longer poses a threat to the oceans. The PET portion of the Ocean Impact Plastic is cleaned, sorted, and compressed into the raw material for GOT BAG products. The material is further processed into fabric for backpacks and bags, with a waterproof coating on the inside and an additional water- and dirt-repellent finish on the outside.
